Cholmondeleys

British all-female dance company founded 1984 by Lea Anderson, its chief choreographer and dancer. The group specializes in short, dry-humoured pieces characterized by a sharp and quirky movement style. Baby, Baby, Baby (1985), a pastiche of 1960s pop girl groups, illustrates their deadpan approach. Other more serious pieces include No Joy, an exploration of human behaviour that uses sign language.

The all-male counterpart, also founded by Lea Anderson in 1988, is called the Featherstonehaughs (pronounced ‘fan-shaws’).
