Choluteca

Town in the department of Choluteca, southern Honduras, situated 90 km/56 mi south of Tegucigalpa; population (1994) 73,000. The town still has a colonial centre, even though it has expanded rapidly. It has dairies, tanneries, a sawmill, and several other manufacturing industries. It is the principal town in the Choluteca department, which stretches from the coastal plains to the slopes of the central highlands, and produces mainly coffee, cotton, and cattle; area 4,211 sq km/1,626 sq mi.

It was one of the first towns to be founded in Honduras (1535), and has a 17th-century church.
