string instrument

Musical instrument that produces a sound when a stretched string is made to vibrate. Today the strings are made of gut, metal, and nylon or Pearlon (a plastic). Types of string instruments include: bowed, the violin family and viol family; plucked, the guitar, ukulele, lute, sitar, harp, banjo, and lyre; plucked mechanically, the harpsichord; struck mechanically, the piano and clavichord; and hammered, the dulcimer.
