Chorley

Industrial town in south Lancashire, England; population (2001) 33,400. It is situated 32 km/20 mi northwest of Manchester on the road to Preston. The former cotton mills are now used for a variety of industries, including paper, medical supplies, plastics, furniture, and carpets.

Although Chorley has some Georgian houses, almost all the buildings are Victorian or later, with many new estates on the generally hilly site. The sugar merchant Henry Tate, founder of the Tate Gallery in London, was born here in 1819.

Astley Hall, a 16th-century house with many later additions, is set in an attractive park 1.6 km/1 mi west of the town centre.
