Sinding, Christian August (1856–1941)

Norwegian composer. His works include songs and four symphonies, but he is chiefly remembered for the popular piano piece Frühlingsrauschen/Rustle of Spring (1896). His brothers Otto (1842–1909) and Stephan (1846–1922) were a painter and sculptor respectively.

He studied at Oslo and later, with the Norwegian government's support, went to Germany, continuing his studies at Liepzig, Berlin, and Munich, where he spent many years of his life. For a time he was professor of composition at Rochester, New York.

The Holy Mountain (1912).

Orchestral

four symphonies and Rondo infinito for orchestra, piano concerto in D♭ major, three violin concertos (1898, 1901, 1917).

Chamber

string quartet (1904), piano quintet, piano trio; sonatas and suite for violin and piano; variations for two pianos; suite, studies, and numerous pieces for piano, including the well-known Frühlingsrauschen/Rustle of Spring; songs.
