Christian Socialism

19th-century movement stressing the social principles of the Bible and opposed to the untrammelled workings of laissez-faire capitalism. Its founders, all members of the Church of England, were Frederick Denison Maurice (1805–1872), Charles Kingsley, and the novelist Thomas Hughes.

In Europe, the establishment of Christian Socialist parties (the first was in Austria) was a direct response to the perceived threat of socialism and therefore contained many conservative features.
