Christian VIII (1786–1848)  A portrait in pastel, by C Horneman (1765–1844), of King Christian VIII of Denmark. An unpopular monarch, Christian reigned from 1839 to 1848. During this time, the problem of Schleswig-Holstein erupted. His ancestor Christian I had promised not to divide these two dukedoms, but 15 years after Christian VIII's death, the pledge was broken. The palace was built in 1760, in rococo style. | King of Denmark 1839–48. He was unpopular because of his opposition to reform.
