Christiansted

Town on the northeastern coast of the island of Saint Croix, in the US Virgin Islands; population (1990) 2,600. Tourism is the leading industry. Rum and sugar are exported from the busy port.

The site was settled first by the French, then (1645) by the English. Christiansted was founded by the Danes (1733), and was capital of the Danish West Indies and a thriving commercial port. It retains a colonial atmosphere, with pastel-coloured stone buildings and cobblestone streets. Alexander Hamilton once lived here; his house has been reconstructed. Christiansted's 18th- and 19th-century architectural core is now a National Historic Site.
