The artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude - most recently known for their ``Gates'' installation in New York's Central Park - now want to stretch gigantic, billowing panels of loosely woven, aluminum-coated translucent cloth across a portion of the Arkansas River as it courses through southern Colorado. But after years of trying, in February the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude managed to bring it off. Notwithstanding the colossal statistics associated with The Gates's equipment, the project's two most potent numbers were arguably twenty-six and twenty-one: the twenty-six years Christo and Jeanne-Claude waited to win the city's approval and the estimated twenty-one million dollars of their own money they reportedly spent on the project's execution. |
