Snapper fish are found in abundance throughout the tropics, such as this one in the Tuamotu Islands of French Polynesia. They are carnivorous, preying on other fish and crustaceans. Amongst the better known of the many different species of snapper are the emperor snapper, grey or mangrove, yellowtail, and the red snapper.

One of a number of tropical, carnivorous fish, about 60 cm/24 in or more in length. Many are red, but the species come in many colours. They are valuable edible fishes, especially the red snapper Lutjanus blackfordi.

Classification

Snappers are in the family Lutjanidae of order Perciformes, class Osteichthyes.
