Chugoku

Southwest region of Honshu island, Japan, area 31,881 sq km/12,309 sq mi; population (2000 est) 7,732,000. The chief city is Hiroshima. Citrus and grapes are grown in the region. Formerly rich fishing grounds have been damaged by industrial pollution.

The junior meeting on peace and environment issues and the future of the region was first proposed by junior writers of local newspaper the Chugoku Shimbun at a meeting of lower house speakers of the Group of Eight major countries held in the city in September last year.
Tokyo, Aug 6, 2009 - (JCN) - Electric Power Development, known as J-Power, and Chugoku Electric Power have established a new company, Osaki CoolGen Corporation, through joint investment to undertake a large-scale demonstration test of oxygen-blown coal gasification combined cycle technology (oxygen-blown IGCC) and CO2 separation and recovery technology.
Further heavy rains have hit the western Chugoku region, including Yamaguchi prefecture, and southern main island of Kyushu, killing at least six more people with two others missing since Friday.
