Chula Vista

City in San Diego County, extreme southwestern California, USA, 13 km/8 mi south-southeast of San Diego; population (1990) 135,200. Chula Vista is a suburb of San Diego. Industries include missile and aircraft parts, as well as structural steel, generators, hardware, chemicals, and other products. The packing and shipping of locally-grown vegetables is economically important, as is retail trade stimulated in large part by cross-border Mexican shoppers. The city has doubled in population since 1970.

Chula Vista is only 10 km/6 mi from Mexico, near the lower end of San Diego Bay, and houses many active and retired military personnel, brought to the area by San Diego's naval installations.
