Chongjin

Port and capital of North Hamgyong province on the northeast coast of North Korea; population (2007 est) 327,500. Timber, iron, textiles, ships, and chemicals are exported; there is steel, pig-iron, and fish processing.

Chongjin has the advantage of being an ice-free port on the Sea of Japan, and was developed by the Japanese during their occupation of the region between 1910 and 1945, and subsequently by the North Koreans as a centre of heavy industry.
