Ciardi, John (Anthony) (1916–1986)

US poet, writer, and teacher. and was poetry editor of the Saturday Review 1956–72. Based in Metuchen, New Jersey, in his later years, he was known as a lecturer and etymologist as well as for his poetry and translations.

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Bates College 1934–36, Tufts, where he gained his BA in 1938, and the University of Michigan, where he was awarded his MA in 1939. He taught at many institutions, and was director of the Bread Loaf Writers Conference, Vermont, 1956–72.
