Cid, Le

Opera by Jules Massenet (libretto by A P d'Ennery, L Gallet, and E Blau, based on Corneille's drama), first produced at the Paris Opéra, France, on 30 November 1885. In the story, Chimène loves Rodrigue; when Rodrigue's father is appointed guardian to the king's son, Chimène's father insults Rodrigue, who then kills him in a duel. Chimène seeks revenge against Rodrigue, but forgives him after he has saved Spain in battle.
