PraiaCapital and port of Cape Verde, on the south shore of the island of São Tiago (Santiago); population (2001 est) 96,300. São Tiago is the most populous of the Cape Verde group of islands and the most agriculturally productive, and Praia has become the leading commercial centre of the country, having a large export trade in bananas, coffee, sugar cane, oranges, and castor beans. There is a significant fishing industry, and a submarine cable station. Tourism has become increasingly important. Praia was made the capital of the Cape Verde Islands in 1770 during the period of Portuguese rule. The country gained independence in 1975. How to thank TFD for its existence?
