Ciego de Avila

Province of central Cuba, bounded on the west by Sancti Spíritus province, and on the east by Camagüey; area 6,910 sq km/2,668 sq mi; population (2001 est) 401,200. The province is flat and largely agricultural with grassland areas in the north and swampland in the south. Sugar, citrus fruits, tobacco, coffee, and cacao are grown and cattle-raising is important. The provincial capital is the city of Ciego de Avila; population (2001 est) 118,400. There are sawmills, sugar refineries, distilleries, and bottling plants in the area.
