Cigoli, Lodovico Cardi da (1559-1613)| Italian painter. Nearly all of his paintings are fervent treatments of religious subjects, usually saints, typical of the Italian art of the Counter-Reformation. Among the best-known paintings is St Peter Healing the Lame Man at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple for St Peter's in Rome. His works mark the transition from Mannerism to the baroque. |
| Born at Cigoli in Tuscany and brought up in the tradition of Florentine Mannerism, he was a pupil of Alessandro Allori and Santi di Tito but was more influenced by the works of Michelangelo, Pontormo, and Andrea del Sarto. His works include The Conversion of St Paul in the Church of San Paolo fuori le Mure and the fresco The Story of Psyche in the Villa Borghese. |
| After travelling in Lombardy he returned to Florence, where he executed paintings for the Palazzo Pitti at the request of the grand duke, and also frescoes in the Church of Santa Maria Novella (1581-84), which show a clear move towards the baroque. He died in Rome. |
