ciliate

Aquatic protozoan of the phylum Ciliophora, characterized by possessing cilia (hairlike organs) at some stage in its life cycle.

Most ciliates are asymmetrical organisms whose shape is definite (unlike the amoebae). There are free-swimming forms such as Paramecium, sessile (fixed) forms, such as Vorticella, and some may be found in colonies.
