Cilician Gates

Narrow pass through the Taurus Mountains in southern Turkey. From an altitude of 1,050 m/3,445 ft on the central plateau of Anatolia, the ancient road descends westwards to the delta plains surrounding Adana and Tarsus near the Mediterranean coast. It was formerly a major north-south trade route, but has now been by-passed by an expressway.
