Cimarron County

County at the tip of the Oklahoma Panhandle, at the extreme northwest of the state; area 4,471 sq km/1,726 sq mi; population (1990) 3,300. It is the only US county that borders four states: Kansas and Colorado to the north, New Mexico to the west, and Texas to the south. Its seat is Boise City. Sparsely populated, it has few other municipalities. It is made up of high plains, at an average of 1,220 m/4,000 ft, and includes Black Mesa, the highest point in the state. Livestock and grain production are the county's main economic activities.

‘The Territory of Cimarron’ was a name for the entire Panhandle region, settled by cattlemen in the 19th century, when it belonged to no one and was also called No Man's Land. In 1887 resident ranchers attempted to protect their land claims by forming a territorial government, but it was not recognized by Congress. In 1890 the land was incorporated into the Oklahoma Territory.
