Cimon (c. 512–449 BC)

Athenian general and statesman, son of Miltiades. He helped Aristides in the formation of the Delian League (478–77 BC) against Persia and commanded the Athenian fleet in campaigns in the Aegean, defeating the Persians decisively on both land and sea at the battle of Eurymedon about 467 BC. He was for some time one of the most prominent members of the aristocratic party but his influence gradually waned as that of Pericles increased. Cimon induced Athens to send him with a force to aid the suppression of the helots in Sparta 462 BC, but the Spartan dismissal of the Athenian force led to his ostracism 461 BC. He returned to lead an expedition against Cyprus in 449 BC, where he died.
