Ciompi, the Revolt of

A revolt in Florence, Italy, in July 1378 by the Ciompi - the low-paid day-labourers in Florence's wool industry - against the guilds who ran the industry. They seized power with the help of artisans and shopkeepers. Having overthrown the city's ruling oligarchy, they forced through radical and democratic legislation. Their extremism and the worsening economic situation caused their allies to deserted them. The guilds were able to regain control at the end of August and political power returned to the wealthy families who had formerly ruled Florence.
