Cirebon| Town and port on Java, Indonesia, on the Java Sea coast east of Jakarta; population (1995 est) 262,300. The large export trade from the surrounding area includes tea, rice, sugar, coffee, and teak. Cirebon is also a minor manufacturing centre, and produces a distinctive batik (dyed fabric). Tourism is increasingly important. |
| Cirebon was part of a Hindu-Buddhist Sundanese kingdom until the 16th century, when Muslim colonists settled here, and the port had become the centre of an orthodox Muslim state by 1550. The Dutch took over the state in 1684, but Cirebon is still a centre of Muslim orthodoxy, and has an Islamic university. |
