Opera by Gioacchino Rossini (libretto by F Aventi), first produced in Ferrara, Italy, on 14 March 1812. In the story, Belshazzar is ‘found wanting’ Amira, wife of King Cyrus, who has been defeated by the Babylonians. Cyrus faces execution, but his fate improves when his forces counterattack.
