Cirque du Soleil

Canadian circus company. Founded in 1984 and based in Montreal, its narrative performances include music and dance as well as traditional circus acts such as clowns, contortionists, and trapeze artists. The performances, which do not include animals, are known for their spectacular scenery and stunts and imaginative choreography.

The company was formed by a group of performance artists, including Cirque du Soleil's founding president and CEO Guy Laliberté (1959- ). Most productions tour internationally, but there are also resident theaters, for example in Orlando, Florida, and Las Vegas, Nevada. The company's multimedia division, Cirque du Soleil Images, creates television, DVD, and film productions.
