Kota Kinabalu

Capital and port on Gaya Bay in Sabah state, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo; population (2000 est) 354,200. It is a deepwater seaport, and the chief exports are rubber and timber. Industries include food processing and the manufacture of plastics, furniture, and soap. The city is the state's road and rail centre and is served by an international airport.

The city was originally named after Charles Jessel of the British North Borneo Chartered Company, which rebuilt the town in the late 19th century. It was renamed after Mount Kinabulu in 1967.
