Ciudad Real

Capital of Ciudad Real province, central Spain, 170 km/105 mi south of Madrid; population (2001) 63,300. There is a trade in livestock and products include textiles, pharmaceuticals, and brandy. The town has a 13th-century Gothic cathedral, and a 16th-century synagogue. Ciudad Real is the seat of the bishop-prior of the military orders.

Province of central Spain in southern Castilla-La Mancha autonomous community; area 19,748 sq km/7,625 sq mi; population (1991 est) 473,900. There is an important petrochemical complex at Puertollano, using crude oil delivered by pipeline from the port of Málaga. The capital is Ciudad Real.
