Ciudad Rodrigo

Town in the province of Salamanca, western Spain, on a hill above the River Agueda; population (2001) 14,000. Products include leather, soap, and pottery. It was captured by the English in 1706, during the War of Spanish Succession, and again in 1812, during the Peninsular War, by the Duke of Wellington; he was subsequently created duke of Ciudad Rodrigo.
