Ciudad Victoria

Town in Mexico and administrative capital of the state of Tamaulipas, situated 483 km/ 300 mi north of Mexico City; population (1995) 213,000. Situated in the western part of the state, it lies at an altitude of 317 m/1,040 ft. Industries include the manufacture of henequen (agave plant) products such as twine, textiles, floor mats, and upholstery. Leather crafts and furniture are also produced in the city.

Ciudad Victoria is an important centre for the surrounding agricultural and cattle-rearing region. It lies on the Mexico City-Nuevo Laredo railway and on the Monterrey-Tampico railway.

The settlement was founded in 1750 as Santa Maria de Aguayo. In 1825 it was made state capital and the name was changed to honour Mexico's first president, Guadelupe Victoria. The Tamaulipas State Agricultural College is in the city.
