For Karl Marx and G W F Hegel, civil society was that part of society where self-interest and materialism were rampant, although Adam Smith believed that enlightened self-interest would promote the general good. Raftery considers awareness can lead to better health of Aboriginal Australians--with a more equal, inclusive and civic society, which is the basis of good health for all. What I'm hopeful about is that in the civic society there are many people out there who think this should not happen, and these young people will see that the only way out is a political solution. For a civic society is a society in which the various elements can express themselves politically, in which an articulation exists between those elements at the political level: not a perfect social order, which is in any case unobtainable, but a society that hears, considers and reforms grievances. |
