Clackmannan

Ancient town in Clackmannanshire unitary authority, Scotland, on the River Devon, 3 km/2 mi east of Alloa; population (2001) 3,500. It was the former county capital, and the ancestral seat of the Bruces. Traditional Scottish architecture is represented in the stone and lime structures of Clackmannan Tower, Tolbooth, and Mercat Cross.

Clack-mannan, the ‘stone of Manau’, which stands beside the Tolbooth, is associated with Manau, a Dark Ages territory located around the upper reaches of the Firth of Forth.
