Claiborne, Liz (1929–2007)

Belgian-born US fashion designer and business executive. After 25 years as a New York designer she founded her own firm in 1976, which she built into a billion-dollar-a-year business, first designing stylish, moderately priced sportswear for women, then expanding into menswear, accessories, and perfume.

Born in Brussels, Belgium, she was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, returning to Europe to study art instead of finishing high school. In 1986, Liz Claiborne Inc became the first business started by a woman to enter into the Fortune 500 list of largest US companies. She retired from business in 1989.
