Claiborne, William (c. 1587-c. 1677)

English-born American colonist and agitator. A Virginia colonist, he feuded with the Lords of Baltimore over the right to a settlement on Kent Island in the Chesapeake Bay. He incited an insurrection and held control of Maryland during 1644-46.

He was born in Westmoreland County, England.
