Clare Island

Mountainous island at the mouth of Clew Bay, County Mayo, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 200. It was the home and headquarters of Grainne Uaile (Grace O'Malley), 16th-century ‘pirate queen of the west’ and ruler of the district surrounding Clew Bay on the death of her father, Owen O'Malley.

The life of Grainne Uaile is the basis of a number of historical novels. The 15th-century square keep she occupied has been used both as a coastguard station and a police barracks. She is buried in the 13th-century abbey.
