Claremont

City in Los Angeles County, southwestern California, USA, 48 km/30 mi east of Los Angeles; population (1990) 32,500. It is a residential suburb and an educational centre, and also has some light industry and fruit handling facilities.

Claremont is the seat of the Claremont Colleges, which include Pomona (1887), Scripps (1926; for women), Claremont McKenna (1946), Harvey Mudd (1955; engineering and science), and Pitzer (1963) colleges as well as the Claremont Graduate School.

Claremont

City in Sullivan County, southwestern New Hampshire, USA, near the Vermont border, on the falls of the Sugar River, near its junction with the Connecticut River, 72 km/45 mi northwest of Concord; population (1990) 13,900. The Sugar provides power for the manufacture of mining and mill machinery, textiles, shoes, and paper, and the city is in a popular resort area.

The oldest Roman Catholic church in the state (1823) is here.
