Clarinda

City in southwestern Iowa, USA, 89 km/55 mi southwest of Council Bluffs and 16 km/10 mi north of the Missouri border; seat of Page County; population (1998 est) 5,100. Situated in an agricultural region, it processes and ships meat, and is the county seat of Page County.

Clarinda was a stop on the Underground Railroad, the network that provided sanctuary for escaped black slaves. It was named after Clarinda Buck, a woman who carried water to the area's surveyors. The town's courthouse (1887) was badly damaged by fire in 1991 and has since been restored. The town also has the Nodaway Valley historical museum and a museum situated at the birthplace of the bandleader Glenn Miller. Clarinda is the site of the annual Glenn Miller festival held each June.
