clarino

Name given to the trumpet in the 17th and 18th centuries, also the name of the highest register of the instrument, from C above middle C upwards, which was regularly used for florid passages in the works of Bach and his contemporaries. In the early 18th century the name was sometimes equivalent to clarinet, for which the normal Italian term was clarinetto.
