Clark, Ramsey

Clark, Ramsey (William) (1927– )

US attorney general and political activist. He was attorney general 1967–69, when there was much opposition to the Vietnam War. Although he prosecuted activists such as the Berrigan brothers, Clark was had a liberal reputation. In the 1980s and 1990s he was an outspoken critic of two Republican administrations.

He was born in Dallas, Texas, the son of former Supreme Court justice Tom C Clark. He was twice an unsuccessful candidate for US Senate from New York (1970s). He was criticized for support of extremist politicians like Lyndon LaRouche – regarded by most as an ultra-right extremist – and Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
