Clark, Ramsey (William) (1927- )

US attorney general and political activist. He was attorney general 1967-69, when there was much opposition to the Vietnam War. Although he prosecuted activists such as the Berrigan brothers, Clark was had a liberal reputation. In the 1980s and 1990s he was an outspoken critic of two Republican administrations.

He was born in Dallas, Texas, the son of former Supreme Court justice Tom C Clark. He was twice an unsuccessful candidate for US Senate from New York (1970s). He was criticized for support of extremist politicians like Lyndon LaRouche - regarded by most as an ultra-right extremist - and Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
