Clark, William (1770-1838)

US explorer. He accompanied Meriwether Lewis on a US government survey, later known as the Lewis and Clark expedition, across North America from St Louis to the mouth of the Columbia River 1804-06. Clark's detailed journals and maps of the journey added to an understanding of the region and encouraged westward expansion. Clark was made superintendent of Indian affairs in 1807, and was governor of Missouri Territory 1813-21.

His brother was George Rogers Clark, a hero of the Revolutionary War.
