Clarke, John H.

Clarke, John H. (Hessin) (1857–1945)

US Supreme Court justice. He was appointed to the federal district court 1914–16, and to the US Supreme Court 1916–22, by President Woodrow Wilson. A renowned peacemaker, he stepped down from the bench in 1922 to campaign, albeit unsuccessfully, for the League of Nations.

He was born in New Lisbon, Ohio.
