Clarksburg

City in north-central West Virginia, USA, at the confluence of Elk Creek and the West Fork of the Monongahela River, 148 km/92 mi northeast of Charleston; seat of Harrison County; population (2000) 16,700. The city is a glass producing centre, with coal, gas, military instruments, and other industries.

Settled in the 1760s, it was a trade centre, and a Union supply base during the Civil War. An oil boom in the area brought rapid growth in the 1890s.
