Clarksville

City and administrative headquarters of Montgomery County, north Tennessee, USA, at the junction of the Cumberland and Red rivers, 70 km/44 mi northwest of Nashville; population (2000) 103,500. It is the processing centre for a beef and dairy cattle region. A leading market centre for dark-fired tobacco, it produces rubber, flour, clothing, machine parts, and heating and cooling equipment. Austin Peay University (1927) is in the city.

Clarksville was settled in 1780 and developed as an important river port in the 19th century; it was incorporated as a city in 1819.
