clathrate

Compound formed when the small molecules of one substance fill in the holes in the structural lattice of another, solid, substance – for example, sulphur dioxide molecules in ice crystals. Clathrates are therefore intermediate between mixtures and true compounds (which are held together by ionic or covalent chemical bonds).

In a Special Paper entitled, "Clathrate Hydrates of Oxidants in the Ice Shell of Europa," Kevin Hand, Christopher Chyba, Robert Carlson, and John Cooper present the following hypothesis: that the formation of mixed clathrate compounds could make up 12% to 53% of the moon's ice shell and stably trap O2 and other gaseous oxidants within the ice.
