Perrault, Claude (1613–1688)

French architect, born in Paris. He was a physician by profession, but became the architect of the Louvre. His east front colonnade (1665) ranks among the finest buildings of the 17th century. He also designed the Observatory at Paris around 1667, and translated Vitruvius's De Architectura (1673), a ten-volume interpretation of Roman architecture.

Perrault''s Colonnade on the east side of the building is an impressive columned façade designed in the classical style by Claude Perrault at the behest of Louis XIV in 1679.
The Academie was granted a home in the royal apartments of the Louvre in 1699, "though they had to share it with the skeleton of an elephant dissected by Claude Perrault.
