Claverack

Town in Columbia County, southeastern New York, USA, 52 km/32 mi southeast of Albany, on the Hudson River; population (1990) 6,400. A primarily residential and agricultural town, it also has some light industry.

Claverack was part of the vast Rensselaerswyck holdings in the mid 17th century, and was at the centre of the mid-19th-century anti-rent movement of small farmers. The town includes several small hamlets, notably Philmont and Hollowville, site of the historic Smokey Hollow Schoolhouse No. 12 (1858).
