Clay, Cassius Marcellus

Clay, Cassius Marcellus (1810–1903)

US politician, born in Madison County, Kentucky, and educated at Yale University. He detested slavery and spent much of his life opposing it. He was US minister to Russia 1861–69. In 1872 he was one of the organizers of the Liberal Republican revolt.
