Clay County

County in northwestern Missouri, USA; area 1,044 sq km/403 sq mi; population (1990) 153,400. The county is bounded by the Missouri River (to the south). Its seat is Liberty. Its southwestern quarter takes in much of Kansas City and its metropolitan area, whose industrial and commercial activities strongly affect the county's economy. The county's other sizeable city is Excelsior Springs, on its eastern edge. In the rest of the largely agricultural county, the production of livestock, corn, wheat, and tobacco are important economic activities.
