Clearwater

City and administrative headquarters of Pinellas County, west-central Florida; population (2000) 108,800. It is situated on the Pinellas Peninsula, Clearwater Harbor (a lagoon of the Gulf of Mexico), and Old Tampa Bay, and lies 32 km/20 mi west of Tampa and 25 km/16 mi northwest of St Petersburg. It is connected by causeways with Clearwater Beach, on a sand key fronting the Gulf, and with Tampa. The site of 1830s orange groves, the city grew around Fort Harrison (1841). A tourist centre since the 1890s, it now is a popular year-round resort, and has a sizeable deep-sea fishing and sightseeing fleet. It is also a residential centre with a large retiree population, and houses a number of corporate headquarters. It is home to Clearwater Christian College (1966) and a campus of St Petersburg Junior College.
